TOPS offers weight loss support a leaner price
Near the top of each session TOPS, is a call for weight loss. To keep O weight gain or weight, depending on the week had the member.
In such a meeting last week in North Spokane, women who reported losses cheers and applause received. However, the reactions were positive for those who had gained a little weight, too.
"We are pleased that you're here," shouted the members of the chapter colleagues who had gathered at tables in a conference room at Turning Point Open Bible Church.
Weight loss is a long way, they know. The organization - the name is synonymous with off Pounds Sensibly - aims to provide education and support that lasts.
"This is not just" I want to lose 20 pounds for my class reunion or a dance or a wedding, "said President Barb Cady." This is a long-term change that requires some work and lasting change. "
The organization took: Going on 70 years may be past its peak. But after its members - and a recent study that looked at low cost compared to commercial weight loss programs - it still works.
"We really are a great support group," said Barbara Groves, 75, wants to step down as coordinator TOPS Eastern Washington after founding his first chapter 47 years ago. "We are like a family."
TOPS members in the 1980s reached its peak, Cady said. He had no support from celebrities, and it was not the Sensations propaganda. Or, actually, a lot of publicity at all, to reach to events such as health fairs and word of mouth new participants.
But it has 150,000 members in the United States, the 4385 members in Washington, which lost a total of £ 22,767 in 2013. 815 members of the Idaho Idaho £ 2491.25 includes lost. (Income of the members Exactly weight were recorded at quarter pound privately at the beginning of each session..)
Although most members of the TOPS offsets implemented in the workplace run more younger, Cady said. Boomers come in greater numbers than their children outside and have more time to focus on health, he added.
Ellie Collins, 73, said she had Jenny Craig, Overeaters Anonymous, hypnosis and more. It is only by TOPS, he said, which has already met their goal of weight loss.
Collins credited "very encouraging camaraderie." Group, and she loves her chapter contains many members who Kops - announced Keep Off Pounds Sensibly, their jackets are emblazoned status meetings - as well as those who are still working to lose weight.
"We all have the same problems," Collins said.
Strong relationships make members feel responsible for one another, said Otis Orchards resident Tammy Postlethwaite, 55, who joined up in 2005. Instead of a meal plan TOPS, takes a low carbohydrate content with an emphasis on vegetables and protein.
Commitment recite the first few sessions embodies the truth Postlethwaite said.
"The Party", despite overeating in private, it is my excess poundage for the whole world to see "- I believe that many people with weight problems overeat in private," she said.
To find out who was enlightening: "Every time you fight what you think with all sometimes:" I'm probably the only person who does this. "
"Homey the least expensive option
TOPS encourages members to consult your doctor in order to establish an ideal weight for help. You can also follow the nutritional guidelines set by your doctor, Groves said.
But for those who are consulting, TOPS recommends two diets that focus on balance and moderation: MyPlate guidelines encourage the Government of the United States and TOPS system change clean foods, the foods into groups and assigned values relative shares carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Depending on weight and weight loss goal of an individual, he or she eats a series of "exchange" in each group every day.
Recognition system marks the successful members, including small victories - weight loss after a birthday or other holiday meal - focused and comprehensive as significant weight loss suffered over the years.
For anyone who has heard of Weight Watchers, the format may seem familiar.
TOPS came first, in 1948 by Esther Manz Milwaukee, made at a community center his bathroom scale and weighed, released his friends, according to a story the TOPS. Weight Watchers began in the 1960s.
But while Weight Watchers has grown into a business for profit, with the support of celebrities and smooth, including tools and smartphone brand products online, tops profit remains and "commercial".
"I think we are much more intimate," Cady said.
Instead of an error-free Jessica Simpson, TOPS 'website offers pictures of the light-members, including the real-life wrinkles and lumps. Location paid staff, volunteers selected to rotate members run their meetings with the leaders of chapters to "Programs". Posts unspent money goes to the members of the obesity research.
There is also a significant difference in price.
TOPS members fee is $ 28 per year, and maybe one or two dollars a week in premiums according to the chapter. Cost of Weight Watchers vary, but membership costs about $ 10 to $ 15 per week, plus the registration fee in some cases.
A 2011 study in the journal Obesity was published, found that the cheapest program can only work so well.
Researchers at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus weight loss monitoring of thousands of members of TOPS. They found that people who have spent three years in the program lost 5 percent to 7 percent of their body weight and kept it off - the results of the study authors call comparable to the most expensive commercial programs. (Although the TOPS club gave access to their data, has no funding for the study.)
Fun on the food
It took some time for the 17 women - men are also welcome - gathered for the meeting on Thursday morning, to get to the heart of the matter of weight loss.
First, recited and sang songs obligations and reports in difficulty and friends cash chapter published.
"I am an intelligent person," the promise for those who are still trying to lose, began. "I'm going to check and not allow me to control my emotions my emotions."
TOPS song selection includes "small portions" (to the tune of "Tiny Bubbles) and" You'll Petite-r "(for" You Are My Sunshine "). Chapter leader Nancy Russell, 60, plays guitar.
But thanks to Bingle took the floor to talk to stay motivated. She led the group, their reasons for wanting to lose weight list.
"The ability to tie his shoes," someone shouted.
"The ability to see your feet," someone said, laughing.
"To be happy again," someone said.
Often she laughed. They talked about what they had to win the weight loss and the daily obstacles: TV commercials, fear, stress, dizziness trigger. Grandchildren - what with the cookies that you have, so that they do leave home?
Groves, the group that puts it in his freezer said.
"Have you ever had a frozen waffle," Collins said. "You wooonderful."
Denise locks, 53, a new member, he said, the friendly atmosphere prelude liked.
"The focus of food is necessary," he said.
