School District Drops weight loss competition

Kentucky (AP): An Eastern Kentucky School District drops plans for a weight loss competition among their students.

Some schools in the School District of Pike County permit documents are sent home asking parents to their children in the contest sponsored weight loss for the district to participate, said the Appalachian News-Express.

Pike County Schools Superintendent David Lester told the newspaper that the Pikeville District decided to cancel the competition and move forward with another plan. Competitive prices are guaranteed to the winner.

"At the moment we do not want to set back and look at weight loss as the only indicator of fitness and health," he said. "I do not want the kids n 'rain you do not need to lose weight, lose weight, only to gain a competitive."

The District of students and employees from participating in weight loss have included in the competition for the highest percentage of weight loss from 15 September to 13 April 2015 and the school the percentage loss of the higher weight would be up to $ 10,000 earned for equipment for physical activity and the officer who lost more weight wins $ 500, the district said.

Students also had the opportunity to win prizes. The high school student who lost more weight had won a scholarship to the University of Pikeville and elementary school students would have a winning iPad tablet computer from Apple, the district said.
