A diet low in carbohydrates prevents better than low-fat diets cardiovascular disease, according to a study published in the September 2 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine that.

Participants in this study were 148 men and women with an average age of 47 years. They did not have cardiovascular disease or diabetes.

They were randomly chosen to participate in a low carbohydrate diet or a low fat diet.

Those who followed a low-carb diet allows up to 40 grams of carbohydrates per day. Those with a low-fat diet were allowed to consume less than 30 percent of daily calories from fat.

For a whole year, participants were asked to regularly meet individually with a dietitian.

What researchers found was those who had lost more weight than those on a low fat diet to a low carb diet.

Low-carb diet lost an average of 12 pounds, while the low-fat diet lost an average of only four pounds,

Low-carbohydrate diet also significantly reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The researchers found that there. Significant decrease in body fat, triglycerides and a decrease in the ratio of total cholesterol to high density lipoprotein (HDL)

Your HDL or good cholesterol, increases.

Nearly 27 million Americans suffer from heart disease and succumb each year about 60,000.

"Low-carb diets have been traditionally viewed as potentially dangerous," said Dr. Lydia Bazzano, research professor of nutrition at the School of Public Health at Tulane University in New Orleans, who worked on the study.

A low fat diet is often recommended for people with heart problems, but low-carb diet is generally not recommended in the past to compare with some doctors, to bad for the heart.

The study showed that this belief is wrong.

Dr. Tian Hu, a graduate student at Tulane and another researcher on the study, said a doctor should be consulted before changes in diet.

"I think that means it is a good choice," said its discovery in a diet low in carbohydrates.
